Peter Thompson was born in Preston Pans, Scotland, in 1840. He was a Miner prior to attesting for the 71st Regiment at Edinburgh, in May 1852. He served with the Regiment during the Crimean campaign, and in India, and was discharged 24 June 1873, having served 21 years and 41 days with the Colours.
