Henry Hibberd was born in Tisbury, Wiltshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for regular service on 9 March 1885, aged 19 years. With them he served in India, March 1886-November 1892. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1892, he was recalled to the Colours in January 1900. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, March 1900-April 1902, being slightly wounded in action at Slabberts Nek on 23 July 1900. With copied service papers.

2328 Private J. Wheeler, 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, was one of a number of men of the battalion to be tried and convicted by Court Martial, for receiving stolen goods and drunkenness on duty, 13 April 1901. This conviction was later held to be illegal and was ordered to be erased from the men’s records. An earlier order for their medals to be forfeited was also reversed. With copied roll extracts confirming the above.

Note: Private Wilson was a member of 140th (Fincastle's Horse) Company. This was part of the second contingent who saw action late in the war against the "Bitter Enders", the Boers who had elected to fight on. Fincastle’s Horse was used as mounted infantry for reconnaissance work, very mobile, fast scouting units and capable of fighting alongside regular army when required.
