An extremely rare 11th Hussars 1853 pattern presentation Cavalry sword. True to pattern, however the hilt has an extra silver wrap in order to make it more decorative. The blade is by Henry Wilkinson No 19199 and is flat sided with slight clipped point. Presentation inscriptions on both sides which read;

Complete with dent free scabbard. This sword is of the highest rarity to a famous British Cavalry unit, given by a Victoria Cross winner during the recipient’s service in India. Blade length 34 ½ inches

A very Rare and interesting British Sword by Woolley & Sargant. Following Waterloo a great number of 1796 Light Cavalry swords were available for re-hilting. This sword takes on the appearance of the 1896 Mountain Artillery Sword with ultra-rare steel (NOT brass) hilt as used by British not Indian troops. But I can’t help but feel it is much earlier as the family who sold it stated the family legend said it was used in the Battle of Pinjarra Western Australia 1834.
Handle and hilt are steel, even pitting all over, one langet missing or has been purposely removed. Blade showing light pitting and has been converted to spear point. Complete with Steel scabbard. Blade length 29 1/2 inches. Total overall length 35 inches.

An extremely rare and unusual 1796 Heavy Cavalry Full dress Sword by Irish maker J. Read maker 8 College Green Dublin in cartouche on top scabbard mount. Apart from decorative stirrup hilt the sword is true to pattern except for the scabbard which is very fancy. Top scabbard ring appears to be period removed possibly to allow easier vertical hanging. Top mount has engraved crown over Prince of Wales plumes and there are various other motives on the scabbard mounts. The scabbard has reasonable repairs due to the age old problem of people withdrawing the blade from the horizontal.

A very rare 1796 Heavy Cavalry Troopers Sword. Often referred to as the “DISC HILT”. This one is very true to pattern still having its langets and full disc hilt. It also has the hatchet point making it as complete a representative you could hope to find. The back of the blade and disc are marked with a capital R with underscored D (Registered?). Pure speculation on my part but could this make it one of the first made during the period of registering original designs? There are two chop marks in the blade which have been nicely welded and are visible in the photo. The heavy dent free scabbard is unmarked. This pattern sword is very rare and difficult to find.

A very rare South Australian Officers 1822 pattern sword complete with scabbard by Wilkinson. Typical brass hilt with VR cypher in its steel scabbard. Quality etching to blade with Volunteer Infantry and SA (South Australia) under crown. Wilkinson’s records show this sword number 27838 was sold to the Agent General for South Australia Jan 25 1887.

1822 Pattern Rifle Officer’s Presentation Sword to Captain H.G. Sutton 40th Lancashire (3rd Manchester) Volunteer Corps, the 81.5 cm blade with single fuller by J. & W. Wood, King St., Manchester is etched overall with scrolling foliage crowned VR cypher strung bugle horn and presentation panels ‘Presented To Captain H.G. Sutton By The Members of No. 8 Company 40th L.R. Volunteers On His Promotion As A Token Of Their Most Sincere Regard 28th Day Of February 1874’, on the reverse a further etched section ‘40th Lancashire Rifle Voltrs.’, the exceptionally ornate pierced hand guard features a crowned strung bugle horn foliate panels side panels of Union sprays wire bound fish skin grip with back strap of ornate oak sprays contained in its plated scabbard this with three highly decorative panels, the sword in overall excellent condition, the scabbard similar but with one very minor dent
Note: Sold with a considerable amount of research concerning Sutton’s career. In brief he was a self-made man being called to the Bar in January 1876 and was promoted to Lieut. Col. in 1876 but resigned his commission in 1879 although only 36 yrs old. This was possibly due to what was then considered a disgrace being in debt regarding a mortgage.

A fine quality example, the black patent leather skull complete with all gold lace braiding, white cloth covered sides and trencher top, the top with crossed gold orris cord, the very fine frontal plate in gilt with silver overlays (uncleaned) these include ‘Seventeenth Lancers’ regimental title and battle honours to ‘South Africa 1900-02’, gold wire rosette with ‘GR’ cypher on blue velvet, correct pattern side ornaments and lined chin chain, correct white horse hair plume with good gilt officers plume holder, wide buff leather sweat band is in very good condition but minus silk attached lining. Silk lining to inside crown of mortar board shows maker in gilt as Hamburger, Rogers & Co.

A WW1 PRUSSIAN ERSATZ LANCE CAP in exceptionally good condition completely made of metal construction. Complete with correct single cocarde, chin strap and helmet plate original to the helmet. It also has its original mortar board cocarde. Particularly good leather liner with no damage.

An extremely rare Saxon Lion top helmet stand/fitting on which the Lion is attached. When Wilkinson sword closed down, a number of moulds, dies and oddments were sold off online. We were fortunate in purchasing two of these fittings and one can’t help but speculate what Wilkinson were doing with them or if the were contracted to make the helmets at some stage. This one is numbered 69. It is very well made and no doubt impossible to find and guaranteed original as described.

A PERSONAL ITEM OF FIELD MARSHALL WILLIAM BIRDWOOD
A late 18th Century George 111 Commode which has been converted to a bedside cabinet or small writing desk. The significance of this piece is that it was formally the property of Lord Birdwood (Field-Marshall the Lord William Birdwood, GCB, GCSI, GCMG, GCVO, CIE, DSO. Barron Birdwood of Anzac and of Totnes). Lord Birdwood had family in Western Australia and the grand-daughter sold a number of his personal effects in a Gregson’s Auction in 1991.
Galleried top with cut out handles. Tambour front and in the Chippendale style. Comes complete with Auctioneers letter of provenance and some research. It was even suggested that this item went ashore at Gallipoli among Birdwood’s smaller items of creature comfort.

A good Victorian 12th Lancers cap complete. Helmet plate with Battle Honours, Peninsular, Waterloo, South Africa 1851.2.3 , Sebastopol & Central India. Two Lion head boss and velvet backed chin chain. The mortar board and skull still have superb finish although the yellow and blue band and red material show a few very minor nips.
The internal liner and frame are in very good condition and there are two marks being W^D and 3 1900. Complete with plume holder and red plume with correct tongue which has lost a little colour.

A scarce Napoleonic Bi-Corn General Officers hat. The bow in the liner would indicate this hat was worn shoulder to shoulder. Unfortunately the large silk cockade and button are no longer present, but the liner shows good honest overall wear and is all present.

Austrian Cavalry Dragoon Officers Helmet 1905. The skull is made of black-lacquered iron sheet, the visor and neck guard of similar construction and edged in a gilt brass rail, fire-gilt comb, side plates with snake-fighting lion decoration, triple-undulated base plate with 3 semi-spherical rivets per side, imperial double-headed eagle application to the front, chin scales in the form of stylised laurel leaves mounted on black velvet-lined leather, and lion-head rosettes. Below the lion-head rosettes, "Wassersenkel" of black lacquered sheet metal, from which gilt side forks run up to the lower edge of the side plates. The comb decorated with the imperial cipher, the crown and with armatures. No liner otherwise very good condition and a very impressive helmet

Transferred to No.4 Sqdn A.F.C. (MBE) honoured by Royal Humane Society for saving life at Southport Qld 1913.
Kt.1959. M.I.D. MO/331 1919. MBE C.G. 6Oct1919.'This Officer has throughout the final stages of the war, performed his duties as Recording Officer in a splendidly official manner, he worked under great stress and difficulty during the final advance. Douglas Lloyd Rankin served Suez with the 2/7 Battalion (so no Africa star), from 13 October 1942 transferring to the 25th Australian War Graves Unit 29th June 1945 to Rangoon and the Pacific region 1 September 1945 which qualified him for the BURMA CLASP an extremely rare award to the Australian Army (the only example I have seen).
Service in Korea commenced on the 9th March 1953 with HQ British Commonwealth Force Korea.
